About The FLAS Specialist Ltd

The FLAS Specialist Ltd was established only recently in direct response to the realisation that families don't know where to go for initial family legal advice. Parents don't even realise that there are important things they need to know BEFORE they are allowed to go to court AND that this knowledge and advice is available.

In some cases, parents/families know that they are entitled to some type of initial family legal advice but simply cannot access that help either because they can't find a lawyer who gives this type of advice (FLAS) or they are prevented from getting to a lawyer for other reasons (health, finances, geography, dependants etc).

The FLAS Specialist Ltd is a legal practice that will provide that initial legal advice to you FREE if you are financially eligible. You may even wish to come back to me again for further follow-up advise after mediation. That too can be subsidised if you remain financially eligible.

If you do not qualify, I will provide the same service at a competitive rate to that provided for by the Ministry of Justice.

My service can be provided via SKYPE or over the phone provided certain conditions are satisfied.

About Me

My name is Kirsty Osprey, and I am the sole Director of The FLAS Specialist Ltd. I have a BA/LLB and have been a family lawyer for over 16 years. I completed my LLB at the University of Canterbury and was admitted to the bar in 1999. I also completed a Batchelor of Arts specialising in Classical Studies.

I first started my legal career in Central Otago before moving to the United Kingdom, where I completed the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test and was subsequently enrolled as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 2003. For the next 7 years I specialised in delivering children's care and protection legal services both in private practice but also at Local Authority level. I appeared at both Magistrates Courts and County Court level and also in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. My experiences in the United Kingdom had many highlights, but perhaps one of the most profound was in 2003 when I assisted Mr Raj Alagh as instructing counsel to Alan Levy QC (deceased) in several Judicial Reviews which culminated in the Hillingdon Judgment 2003. This decision was the 'test case' for unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC) and required all UASC to be accommodated by their respective local authority under the Children Act 1989, which entitled the majority of these children to further care up to 21.

In 2009, I returned from the United Kingdom and resumed practice in New Zealand, remaining in Christchurch.

I continued to work in private practice and also for the Ministry of Social Development until starting my own legal practice in September 2016 as The FLAS Specialist Ltd - delivering government subsidised Family Legal Advice Service (FLAS) to help families not only access the Family Dispute Resolution Services, but also the Family Justice System.
